Access to safe water and sanitation remains a major challenge in Somalia due to prolonged conflict, climate shocks, and weak infrastructure, leaving millions without basic services. Limited access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene contributes to disease outbreaks, poor health, and malnutrition, particularly among vulnerable communities and IDPs. HIRDO works to improve access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services through community-based and integrated interventions. The organization promotes hygiene awareness, safe water use, sanitation facilities, and waste management to improve public health and dignity.

HIRDO is implementing WASH programmes in Benadir Region (including Heliwa, Waberi, Hodan, and other districts), integrating WASH into nutrition services. Key interventions include rehabilitation of water supply systems and elevated tanks, construction and improvement of latrines and handwashing facilities, provision of handwashing stations with soap, hygiene promotion and community awareness and training of health and nutrition staff on hygiene and disease prevention. Through these interventions, HIRDO has improved access to WASH services in 20 nutrition sites/OTP centers, benefiting over 10,000 women, children, strengthening infection prevention, and community health outcomes.
